Javea is in the north of Alicante province, between Cabo San Antonio and Cabo
La Nao. Javea comprises three main areas - the old town, the fishing harbour
and the Arenal. The wooded hills behind the beach
and town hide the beautiful residential areas.
The historic old town is inland and worth visiting. The working fishing
port alongside the marina is fascinating and has many other attractions including shops,
bars and restaurants - and an attractive promenade. The Arenal, with its
excellent shops, bars and restaurants has a wonderful sandy beach and is the
centre of Javea's nightlife.
The town has a relaxing and typically Spanish atmosphere with many contrasting features, from the pretty
old town to the fishing harbour with its varied restaurants and bars and the Arenal beach.
The old fishing port is full of character and with the marina is one of the town's main
tourist areas, overlooked by the impressive El Montgo mountain, famous for its appearance of a slumbering
elephant, with its trunk pointing seawards.
The old town still retains much of its Medieval past including narrow winding streets, small
squares and the 15th century church of San Bartolome in Plaza de la Iglesia.
Other areas of interest include the food market, cultural centre, Museum of Archaeology and
Ethnology and the chapel of Santa Ana, all within easy walking distance.
In a pretty sheltered bay, the popular sandy Arenal beach has a long, very attractive promenade
with many shops and boutiques selling a wide range of quality goods, beach wear and accessories.
The Arenal has many excellent bars and restaurants to suit every taste, serving most European cuisines,
and at night the bars come to life, offering a good mix of live music, discos and entertainment.
The adventurous can discover the small shingled beaches at Granadella, bordered by pine trees and ideal
for diving. The Ambolo beaches are suitable for naturists, and there are several small coves
accessible by only from the sea.
